Rome has a great public transportation system. If you are staying in or near Rome city, you won't need a car. At times you can walk down or take taxi. Some travelers also find it convenient to rent scooters (Vespas) to make travel within Rome fast and easy. However, be careful while you drive it. If you have not driven a scooter before, we don't suggest learning on the streets of Rome!

Metro
The Metro system has two lines, A and B, which cross at Stazzione Termini (Termini Station). Trains run approximately every 7-10 minutes, from 5:30am until 11:30pm every day (until 12:30am on Saturdays).

Tickets for both the bus system and Metro can be purchased from tabacchis, bars, or vending machines at metro stations and major bus stops. Traveling in public transport in pretty safe, however, beware of pickpockets!

Taxis
You can also hire taxis for longer distances. Taxis in Rome are not cheap. At night, it can be difficult to find a Taxi. Official taxis are metered yellow or white. Taxi meters run differently according to the time of the day and whether its holiday/weekend or normal weekday.

You can walk around Rome when you are tired of using the buses and trains. Rome's historic city is pretty compact and you can cover a lot of it on foot.

You can also rent scooters, a very convenient way to go to places in Rome in less time. However, be careful if you have not driven scooter before!
